TRX

TRX is a great workout!! Since I teach a TRX class every Thursday evening, Kristen asked me to do a post on TRX. If you haven’t checked her blog out, you should!! 🙂

Benefits of TRX:

  1. TRX provides a full body strength training program using gravity and your body weight to perform many different exercises.
  2. You are in control of how much you challenge yourself by where you position yourself in relation to the TRX suspension straps…depending on the exercise, you can make the exercise more challenging by positioning your body closer to the strap or less challenging by positioning your body further away from the strap.
  3. TRX exercises improve core strength and balance…there are many single-leg exercises that will improve balance and if the participant focuses on activating the core muscles with every exercise, core strength will also improve.
  4. TRX exercises increase muscular endurance and power.
  5. You can work every muscle group in a short amount of time (30-45 minutes is typical).
  6. TRX exercises can be aerobic (e.g. single-leg burpees, jumping lunges, etc.) or anaerobic (e.g. bicep curls, squats, tricep extensions, etc.) in nature.
  7. The TRX suspension strap doesn’t take up much room and can travel well.
  8. There are TRX suspension straps that fit over any door or bar, so you can workout anywhere…in the gym, at home, outside, at work on a break, at a hotel.
  9. The TRX workouts benefit people of all fitness levels and athletic abilities.
  10. The TRX suspension straps are much cheaper than a home gym or gym membership.

TRX Workouts:

There are literally hundreds of TRX exercises that one can do, but here is a good list of 45 effective TRX exercises to start with to challenge the full body. There are exercises for beginner, intermediate and advanced TRX athletes. You can learn more by attending a TRX class in your area, meeting with a personal trainer, finding youtube videos with TRX exercises, attend a conference or training for TRX or meeting up with someone you know who participates in TRX.

  1. Thank you so much for taking the time to write such an insightful post. I’ve heard about this a lot, but was clueless as to what it is and how it is used. It seems like something worth looking in to!! I love the versatility of it.

    1. It was fun to write, so thanks for the idea!! I love the ease of equipment, challenge you can give your body and variety of exercises you can do in a short amount of time.

  2. This is great-thank you! I bought my TRX a few months ago, but my elbow problem prevented me from using it, but it’s getting better every day so I hope to start using it soon.

  3. Thank you for this post Kecia! I just got a (used) TR-X and can’t wait to use it. Curious – what sort of routine do you do for your workout? 2-3x a circuit with a certain number of reps of 3-4 exercises?

    1. I’m glad it was timely for you Brittany! I typically do 2x as many different exercises as I can fit in the first 20 minutes so that I can repeat it for the next 20 minutes and then do a 5 minute cool down with stretching. I can’t wait to hear what you think 🙂

  4. My coach has us use TRX within our strength work outs. We usually do 1 or 2 exercises per routine. But it is just mixed in with everything else!! A lot of times it is just rows or post delts. As a matter of fact we did biceps which i had never done before! It is amazing how it can be used as your only bit of equipment!! 🙂 This is my first year using it and i think it is great!!

    1. TRX definitely provides you with a new and different challenge, which I love! I’m glad you are getting to experience it and enjoy it’s challenges…even on a small scale 🙂

  5. I love my TRX! I have it at home:) My coach has me doing TRX strength training as my primary form of strength training. Apparently it’s the way to go for triathletes byebye crossfit days. I like doing atomic push-ups, even though I want to die while doing them. I also love doing lunges with the TRX! Great post Kecia!

    1. Thanks Kristin!! I LOVE TRX!! 🙂 It is definitely a great workout for triathletes and you can incorporate aerobic and anaerobic exercises. So much better for triathletes than crossfit 😉

  6. Thanks a lot for this post, Kecia! I’ve actually never tried TRX. When I still had a gym membership for swimming they had classes I wanted to attend, but none that worked with my schedule.
Although I wouldn’t be able to do much of it anytime soon, I might ask for a system for Christmas!
