16 weeks ’til #IMWI: work, work, work

The theme of last week was definitely work. Not the kind of hard work you put into your training, but the long hours put into your job that can be mentally draining. I came to the realization that working 55 hours and only exercising 3 hours in a week is MUCH more exhausting than working 40 hours and exercising 18 hours! Thankfully last week was a planned recovery week, there are only 5 days left of school with the students, grades were due this morning, and there is little grading left to do for this coming week. I am beyond grateful for the help and support of the Iron Hippie, especially during weeks when I have a few extra balls that I am trying to juggle!

Monday:

Today was a rest day! After the really big training week last week, we knew we would be taking today off of exercise and our bodies were thankful for the rest. Today was a really long day at work, so when I came home, I hibernated in the bedroom listening to TedTalks, reading, and trying to relax for most of the evening.

Tuesday:

We did not have a morning workout planned, so we slept in. After a full day of work, I decided it would be best to skip my evening workout and spend my evening grading. Not ideal, but I had a LOT of grading that needed to be done. Thankfully the Iron Hippie ran some errands for me so I could keep working through dinner.

Wednesday:

We woke up early for a 75 minute sweatfest on the bike. Intervals, #bikelove, and #solesistasweat was the perfect combination to start my day! After another long day of work, I came home to another evening of grading. When the end of the school year is near, there can be a lot of grading to do.

DCIM100GOPROG0022891.

Thursday:

I had more grading to do, so I arrived at school at 6 am to start another long day at school. The students were testing their solar ovens outside today. It is fun to spend the day outside, but lack of structure is sometimes hard for the students, which means a lot of additional “classroom” management required of me. I was exhausted by the end of the day. I came home and continued to work for my part time jobs (writing fitness articles for our local paper and teaching TRX for our Parks and Rec department). After teaching TRX, we had an unplanned visit from some close friends. It was fun to have them just stop by unannounced!

Friday:

With the students doing their egg drop today and more grading to do, I got to work at 6 am again to set up for the egg drop and get as much grading done before students arrived as possible. Another day out of the classroom, meant another long and draining day of having to be mentally “on” all day. After school, I came home and continued to grade and post grades until 7 pm. I was FINALLY caught up on all the grading and it felt AMAZING!! Having worked 55 hours and only exercising 2 hours this week, I decided it was time to relax and let my mind go somewhere else for a while.

Saturday:

I was able to sleep in this morning with nothing on the schedule, so I took complete advantage of it! At about 7:30 am, I finally planted my feet to the floor and decided to start my day. I paid bills, balanced the checkbook (am I the only one who still does this?!), ran a bunch of errands, did some house chores, picked up my race packet (did I mention I am doing my first duathlon EVER tomorrow?!), and read some more of my book while the Iron Hippie worked some overtime hours. We went to a high school graduation celebration in the evening, then spent the rest of the evening getting ready for my duathlon in the morning.

Sunday:

I’ll have a more detailed race recap for you on my duathlon, but let’s just say I had a BLAST doing what I love, had a podium finish, and got to race with my #solesister…WIN!! After the race, it was all about refueling. I followed this up with some girl time with a friend, some down time at home, and regrouping for the coming week.

Weekly Totals: 3 hours & 25 minutes (Never mind the 55 hours at work…that was so much more draining!!)

Swim: Nothing, Zilch, Nada 😦
Bike: 33.5 miles
Run: 4.0 miles
Strength Training: 45 minutes

Post Ironman Boulder – What’s Next???

I have spent the last 2 weeks recovering from Ironman Boulder, working out when I want, visiting family and enjoying life. Now it is time to get back to work…literally. Tomorrow marks the last day of summer vacation before I start the 2015-2016 school year on Wednesday. Here are some pictures of the last 2 weeks of my summer break/recovery time:

Running back in Iowa with LOTS of humid, thick air…I miss the mountains!!

I decided today is a great day to get back into a consistent workout routine. After all, I have dreams and I am going to continue to work hard to fulfill my dreams 🙂

IMG_4882

For now, I have the following races scheduled for the remainder of 2015:

This provides me with a good variety for the remainder of the year…a little bit of triathlon, a little bit of running and a little bit of cycling. Lots of fun to be had yet this year!

Do you fall out of a consistent routine during the summer months/post racing? How do you get back into a routine? How do you incorporate good variety in your training/racing while going into the off season?

6 weeks ’til Ironman Boulder

Last week was the start of our last build for Ironman Boulder…it seems like just yesterday that we signed up for IMBoulder and now we are only 6 weeks away from race day. Crazy how time flies by!!

Swim: 7371 yards (some of this was done in the 50 meter pool)

After getting through the warm-up on Tuesday’s swim (600 yards into the 2400 yard swim), I felt my swim cap sliding off the top of my head, so I did what I always do…tug on the edges of the swim cap to readjust it. That is when the front of it tore. I had choices: a) get out of the pool and quit swimming, b) put a new swim cap on and keep swimming, c) make adjustments to the torn swim cap and keep swimming. If this happened on race day while swimming, what would I do? This was the perfect opportunity to see how long I could keep swimming with a torn swim cap, so I chose option c. Thankfully the adjustments I made to my torn swim cap held up and I was able to complete the remainder of my swim without further problems. #justkeepswimming

IMG_3448

Bike: 81.46 miles

Thursday’s bike intervals were KILLER! The previous time I did this one hour trainer workout (3xLadder), was March 23. This Thursday, I went 1.4 miles farther (in a 1 hour time period) than I did on March 23 and my normalized power was almost 10 watts higher. I also showed an increase in power with every working set on Thursday. In March, the 3rd working set (of 4 sets) showed I dropped my power and typically the last interval of each set was a drop in power as well. I am very happy with my performance on Thursday and I don’t think I could have pushed harder if I had tried. I was completely cooked by the end of this workout!! #hardworkpaysoff

IMG_3478

Run: 22.08 miles

Tuesday morning we had hill repeats on the calendar. We were scheduled to run 6 hill repeats on the hill that we normally run on. After finishing the 6 hill repeats, we were still feeling good, so we decided to run 2 additional hill repeats while #rememberingTRJ

Brick: (I break the distances out into bike mileage and run mileage)

I was hoping that the best brick workout this week would have been on Saturday. It was planned that we would swim for 1 hour, transition to the bike for 6 hours and then run for 1 hour. We got our swim in before Mother Nature decided to change our plans. We had options, but we decided to #beflexible and recover just a bit more.

IMG_3506

So…the best brick workout was on Sunday. We had 1 hour of speed work on the bike and then quickly transitioned to a 90 minute run. I was so happy that I finally got to run with my sole sister again!! #solesistasweat

IMG_3518

Strength Training: 1 hour & 45 minutes

I taught TRX twice this week! Monday I was asked to substitute for the noon class. I really pushed this group of women and I was sore until Thursday morning…hello, DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)…I haven’t felt you in a while 🙂

Weekly Totals: 13 hours & 40 minutes

Disappointment, yet progress:

I am sad that we missed 7 hours of #bricklove on Saturday, but VERY happy that I am learning to #beflexible in my training. I am VERY type A…typically I would have forced this workout to happen, even if it meant getting on the trainer for 6 hours. I am happy to say that I am making progress and becoming more balanced in life and training is a huge part of my life.

Weekly Highlight:

I received an Osmo Nutrtion delivery on Thursday. Restocking the sports nutrition in the pantry makes my heart happy.

How was your week? Did you have any challenges that you had to overcome this week?

22 Weeks ’til Ironman Boulder

This was a recovery week and was supposed to be a week of parent teacher conferences. Thanks to Mother Nature deciding to continue to force her bad attitude on us, we had an early dismissal from school and no parent teacher conferences on Wednesday. This was a nice reprieve, but it puts a kink into my training schedule for the coming week since we have to make up those conferences…

Monday:

Rest Day…While I had planned to get up early and complete an hour strength training session, I decided resting up for the coming week would be more advantageous due to the long days ahead of me. After a 13 hour work day, I came home to a very special delivery…my new Coeur Sports gear!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!! #heartandcourage #stylishspeed

Basil loves my new Coeur gear!!

Tuesday:

Rest Day #2…I intentionally took Tuesday and Wednesday off from working out since I had an FTP test on the calendar for Thursday afternoon. My 13 hour work day #2 is in the books…

Wednesday:

Rest Day #3…I did have to shovel some snow, but that was the only working out that I did in preparation for my FTP test tomorrow. Instead of leaving work at 7:30 pm, we were released at 1:30 pm due to the weather. What does one do with this extra down time?!?!?!?

IMG_1912

Thursday:

This was a half day of work, so I was home by noon…just in time for a nap before my FTP test 😉

And now for the FTP test…after a 20 minute warm-up, I pushed hard for 20 minutes and sweat A LOT. The results??? I improved my FTP by 21 watts (up from 156 watts to 177 watts) from my last test 2 months ago. #progress 🙂 I still have LOTS of room for growth and will continue to work hard to continue to get stronger and faster on the bike!!

With the day off, I could go to the gym and complete my workouts whenever I wanted, so I opted for about 10:00 am…

I followed my swim up with 50 minutes of #runlove including 6×1 minute at faster than 5K pace. I ran these at a 7:03 pace…I’m not sure I could have gone much faster today. My legs were still REALLY tired from yesterday’s FTP test and TRX class.

IMG_1944
No…I didn’t pee myself, lots of sweating on this run!!

After refueling and cleaning up, it was time for a massage. Bad news…OUCH!!! Good news…Nick noticed that my muscles aren’t as tight as they have been in the past. Maybe my thyroid meds are slowly starting to work. 🙂

What were the highlights of your week?

23 Weeks ’til Ironman Boulder

What a great week of workouts!!

Monday:

I started the day with full body strength training and ended the day with a 2.5 hour ride. I typically don’t ride this long on a Monday evening, but we missed our long ride yesterday due to the 4 hour swim clinic (which was a 90 minute drive away in each direction…making for a very long day). While on the trainer, I watched the Bourne movies…the action-packed films made the time go by a bit quicker.

IMG_1792 IMG_1802 IMG_1804

Tuesday:

I started the day with a 50 minute fartlek run on the treadmill. I didn’t run outside due to the early morning darkness and the cold temperatures…

IMG_1809

After work, I went to the pool for 2800 yards of #swimlove, only it wasn’t the kind of love I was hoping for…I struggled with this swim. After Sunday’s swim clinic, I had LOTS to work on, so there was no time like the present to get to work. Changing form never feels well…it was true of this swim as well.

IMG_1812

Wednesday:

I started the morning with some #bikelove in the pain cave…Can you say brrr?!?!?! The windchill temperature was -25F…good thing I can just roll down the stairs and onto my bike without having to leave the house.

IMG_1817

IMG_1816

I ended the day with my #FaveWorkout of the week that involved some serious #swimlove. If you haven’t read about this swim workout, I overcame some huge mental obstacles that allowed me to push harder than I thought possible. This was also a great workout to start preparing the body for altitude in Boulder!!

Quote of this swim workout…

“Success is not final. Failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ~Winston Churchill

IMG_1819
I had a GREAT swim…I was sad that it was time to retire my swim cap, although it was 3 years old 😉

Thursday:

The bitterly cold temperatures Thursday morning sent me back to the treadmill for some #runlove…

Saturday:

We had plans to meet the Iron Hippie’s parents for lunch in Cedar Falls (~90 minutes drive each way), so we had to get our run done early. It was cold and it was dark, so it was back to the mill for our long run. Thankfully I got to run next to my sole sister, so I started my day with #solesistasweat and ~15 miles of #runlove…

This was followed up by 30 minutes of core work including 3:30 of plank. I am slowly building up the time I can hold planks…little by little everyday.

After completing our workouts, we loaded up the car and headed to Cedar Falls. While there, I also got a shoe fit from Scott Gall at The Runner’s Flat. He is not only a very knowledgable shoe fit expert, but also an amazing triathlon coach. When we go back to training with a coach, he will be the first person we call. He said I am alternating between two great shoes that are a perfect fit for me…Asics Gel Nimbus and Brooks Pure Flow. He also recommended that I try throwing the Newton Kismet into the mix…

I can’t wait to give these a try 🙂 We couldn’t leave Cedar Falls without stopping off for some yummy goodness at Scratch Cupcakery…the two on the left were mine (Butterfinger and Mint Chocolate) and boy were they tasty 😉

Followed the run up with 20 minutes of core work in my parents basement 😉

Sunday:

We woke up to snow…LOTS.OF.SNOW…and wind…LOTS.OF.WIND…sustained winds at about 35 mph. Hello February…so nice to see you…NOT…maybe it would be better if we were actually at home and didn’t have a 3 hour car trip (on a good travel day) in front of us. We stayed at my parents overnight to avoid driving in less than desirable conditions.

Rest Day…
