Training
January started with this…
I have had some knee pain since September. After months of no running, lots of active release therapy, and a cortisone shot in my knee, Doctor Warme wanted to make sure we weren’t missing something before training for Ironman Wisconsin started up. Good news…everything looks healthy and happy, which means I have continued active release therapy and have been able to start running again! I am happy to say that the train I fell off of last month picked me back up and I am on cruise control!! Lots of green in Training Peaks this month 🙂 #happyheart
Reading
Dr. G recently wrote about why we need to Ditch the Psychological Safety Net. We need to stop making excuses and self-handicapping, which does us “no good when it comes to building a champion mindset for sport performance.” A great read for all athletes!
The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls is a true story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms. It is an outstanding read!
Recovery
There has been lots of active release therapy this month to heal the leg and release the tension around the knee. I’ve incorporated hot yoga into my schedule every week, I take an epsom salt bath every week and foam roller like a crazy woman! All of this has allowed me to run the farthest I’ve run since September…4 whole pain-free miles on the treadmill 🙂
Learning
I am taking the Living Brave Semester with Brene Brown this semester, so I am also re-reading Daring Greatly and Rising Strong for this class. “Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Based on twelve years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Daring Greatly is not about winning or losing. It’s about courage. In a world where “never enough” dominates and feeling afraid has become second nature, vulnerability is subversive. Uncomfortable. It’s even a little dangerous at times. And, without question, putting ourselves out there means there’s a far greater risk of getting criticized or feeling hurt. But when we step back and examine our lives, we will find that nothing is as uncomfortable, dangerous, and hurtful as standing on the outside of our lives looking in and wondering what it would be like if we had the courage to step into the arena—whether it’s a new relationship, an important meeting, the creative process, or a difficult family conversation. Daring Greatly is a practice and a powerful new vision for letting ourselves be seen.”
I am learning how to be more vulnerable…remove my protective armor and expose my feelings, thoughts and emotions, even when I have zero control over the outcome. I am working on finding the courage to show up and be seen in different aspects of my life. This is challenging, but I know I will be a better person through this work. “Courage over comfort” is my mantra.
Balance
I’ve been spending a little less time on social media and a bit more time coloring. I can release stress and create a pretty picture at the same time 😉
Quote of the Week
“To uncover your true potential you must first find your own limits and then you have to have the courage to blow past them.” ~Picabo Street
How was your January? What is your favorite recovery technique? How do you keep balance in your life?
Whew! So glad the knee is happy & healthy & on the road to recovery – I know it must’ve been tough holding back, but must feel SO good now to be cleared for training! Also love that you’ve been coloring…my sister bought me one of those books, and I’ve been meaning to bust it out – looks so relaxing!
Thanks Jenn! I am also super pleased to know that the knee is happy and healthy! I know what I need to do and will be working on that diligently to start pounding the pavement for longer durations.
You definitely need to color!! So relaxing and enjoyable 🙂
I didn’t realize you were dealing with this! Glad you are on the road to recovery! Love that you are adding coloring to the mix! 🙂
Thanks Deborah!! It has been a challenging time, but I have to remember that in struggle, I’ll find strength. Color is a great thing to add to anyone’s life 😉
I’m so glad that January is going so well for you…and your knee 😉 I’ve had a few hiccups over the last month, but am settling into my new routine fabulously!
Thanks Amy! I’m glad your new routine is full of fabulousness! 😉
Glad your knee is good Kecia.
Me too! Thanks Jim!
Glad to read the good news on your knee! I’m a huge fan of active release technique!
Thanks Andrea! Me too! It helps so much! Some of it isn’t fun, but it is effective!
I am in the class and training for Wisconsin as well. Good luck!
Thanks Beth! Will Wisconsin be your first Ironman? The class is great! I’m so glad I am taking it!
Glad to hear that your MRI results are good and you are back to running!! Better to be safe than sorry!!! 🙂
Favorite recovery: I foam roll every night!! I usually get a massage every 4 weeks.
So true Leslie! That’s why we had the MRI done. I love a massage, but my massage therapist is taking a family medical break, so I’ve been getting more active release therapy and foam rollering like crazy. I need to do it everyday like you 😉 Its all about making time…
Oh no at least you are doing other recovery methods!! 🙂 I don’t watch a lot of tv at night but that is when I foam roll. It is easy just to do it then…but definitely fitting it in is tough!!
First, your salt is on it’s way. Second, I’m glad your knee is ok and you had a pain-free run! Yay!!! Third, where did January go???? Anyway, finding balance is tough, but I know I would go nutzo without having some down time. Pedal to the medal is not my style 🙂 Thanks for the book recommendation. I wish I had more time for that – I have so many textbooks for my upcoming certification and running theory books to read, but maybe I can slip one of those in there for my downtime reading.
I can’t believe January is almost gone!!! We have definitely been taking a bit of a break this week (yay for recovery week), before getting back into a more normal workout schedule (less bike, more swim/run). I need to read every night before bed to unwind and reading books I am required to read just doesn’t quite do it for me. I hope you find time to read for enjoyment instead of requirement!!
I love reading!! I typically feel guilty when I read “fun” books since I have so many others to read. I’ll get to them sooner than later though as I’ve set aside “work reading” during the day.
It is good to have “fun” reads! Enjoy them 😊
Do they know what was initially wrong with your knee? Knee pain can be a real mystery. I have knee pain on and off and it’s always so random. I know the issue has to do with my IT band, but the moment I go to do something about it the pain goes away. Maybe it’s mental? Haha!
They think I did it when I ran down Mount Diablo in California only 1 week post Ironman (after having run up it of course). The downward pounding for almost 3 miles was more than my muscles could take. Now they are trying to get everything back to normal, although I’m not sure what that really is anymore 😜
Yikes on the MRI, but glad everything came back normal. It’s nice rule out any problems and not have to worry you’re causing damage by continuing to train through it. Hot yoga sounds nice, I keep meaning to try that.
Thanks Emily! It is nice to know there isn’t anything wrong. You should definitely try hot yoga!! I love it!!
